About the Floyd Tool Barn

The Tool Barn is located at 209 W Main Street in downtown Floyd, in the back of the property (see map).

We envision a thriving community where everyone has access to the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to live sustainably and independently.

Our goal is to create a hub that fosters collaboration, reduces waste, and strengthens local resilience through shared tools, repair services, and educational opportunities.

By connecting people, skills, and ideas, we aim to build a future where environmental stewardship and community empowerment go hand in hand. If you have any questions, please email us at info@floydtoolbarn.org.

How It Works

Become a member and reserve your tools.

Step 1

Become a Member

To become a Member, complete the application form, sign the Waiver Form, and pay the membership fee.

Step 2

Reserve Your Tools

Reserve your tools online or in person. Members may renew each tool once if there is no hold or waiting list for the tool.

Step 3

Pick Up Your Tools

Members can pick up and drop off their tools at our location at 209 W. Main Street in Floyd during open business hours.

Borrowing Guidelines

  1. Members can borrow up to (5) different tools at a time for a period of one week, unless otherwise agreed.
  2. Members must be 18 years old or over.
  3. To become a Member first: (a) complete the application form, (b) complete the Safety Training; (c) sign the Waiver Form, and (d) pay the membership fee (*No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Volunteers will receive free membership.).
  4. By borrowing an item, Members acknowledge that they are capable of using that tool safely and properly.
  5. Only the Member is authorized to use Floyd Tool Barn (FTB) tools.
  6. Members will borrow and return their reserved tools during open business hours. All tools borrowed should be returned to FTB by close of business on their due date. Tools can be renewed for one extra week (two week maximum for one checkout period), so long as no other members have reserved those tools. If another member has reserved a tool, it should be returned by its original due date.
  7. Members may renew each tool once if there is no hold or waiting list for the tool. Renewals can be done by contacting FTB prior to the due date. You can email us at info@thetoolbarn.com.
  8. If you reserve a tool and do not pick it up on the date reserved, the reservation will be automatically canceled unless you contact us requesting a revised pick-up date, in which case your pickup date will be revised as long as there is no hold or waiting list for the tool.
  9. If tools are damaged beyond reasonable repair, FTB may request that the Member contribute to the cost of replacement.
  10. FTB reserves the right to use appropriate steps to retrieve delinquent tools (borrowed tools that have not been returned and that we have had no communication regarding when they will be returned), including the use of a collection agency and/or legal action. The member will be responsible for all such costs. FTB also reserves the right to forgive fees due to special circumstances.
  11. The Member agrees that FTB is not responsible for any manufacturing defects in quality of workmanship or materials inherent in any borrowed tools.
  12. The Member agrees that if any borrowed tool becomes unsafe or in a state of disrepair, they must immediately discontinue use of the tool and notify FTB of the issue.
  13. All tools are to be returned clean and in the same or better condition as they were issued, barring normal wear and tear.
  14. FTB reserves the right to refuse the loan of any item at its discretion.

Volunteer at the Floyd Tool Barn

The Floyd Tool Barn is run by volunteers, and any profit we make goes directly to supporting the operation of the Tool Barn and other projects of Sustain Floyd Foundation. Volunteers receive a free Tool Barn membership. Floyd Fixers @ The Repair Hub

We are a group of local community members that are offering to help fix whatever household items you may need help with. This could range from small appliances, furniture or simple tools to keep your item functioning and save you from throwing it out and buying a new one. We can assist you by evaluating the potential issues, making the repair ourselves, and/or referring you to another professional to do the repair.

This is a free service (donations welcome), open to the public. We can’t guarantee that we can fix everything, but we’re willing to help. If there is a cost for parts needed, we’ll help source the parts and find an affordable option.

Email us with a picture and description of the item you need repaired and we’ll try to match it with a Fixer!

Skill Sharing

We all have skills to share that someone wants to learn! When we identify common skills or projects that the community wants to learn about, we’ll organize workshops together to teach and learn from each other.

Example: When winter is coming around, do you know how to prepare your generator so it works if/when you need it? Lots of us may need to learn this, so we’ll find one of our community members that has this knowledge and is willing to share.

In this way, we build community reliance and self sufficiency at the same time!

Directions

Please only visit during posted open hours, when yard signs are out.
Drive down the dirt road, turn right onto the property (a bit of steep turn) and park on the grass in front of the barn.
