SustainFloyd collects many harder-to-recycle items on First Saturday of each month from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm at the Floyd Farmers Market. We are located outside next to the Refillery during warm weather, and in the Sustain Floyd office during cold weather.

Too Much Plastic!
Each month at our recycling event we collect several bags full of #5 plastic, primarily yogurt pots. Recently our local contact for #4 and # 5 plastics stopped accepting them. There are other options – and we do have a place to take plastics collected to date – but it is an ever changing situation. We are exploring our options moving forward and will make a decision about whether to collect in 2026.
Ultimately, recycling is not the answer to the plastic problem we face. A commitment to reducing plastic use is the most powerful tool we have. This is what lies behind SustainFloyd’s projects of the Refillery and the Floyd ReSource Guide. While we remain involved with recycling activities, we hope that these are a step towards the awareness that each of us can develop our own ways to reduce the plastic (and other waste) that flows through our lives. Less waste makes for less stress!

We collect the following items at our monthly events. This list is subject to change, so please check the top of this page or our Facebook account each month before bringing items.

Where Does Everything Go?
Local Vendors & Organizations
Many of the odd items are being collected for reuse by local vendors and charitable organizations, including:
National Programs
We are collecting for a number of national programs as well. Some of these, such as Burt’s Bees, BIC’s pen recycling program, Gillette’s razor blade program, and SmartWool’s used sock program pay for shipping. Others, such as the medicine bottles, sneakers, #4 & #5 plastic, and used books we have to deliver or pay for shipping ourselves. We collect donations to cover these costs.
TREX Challenge: Plastic Film
We participate in TREX challenges to collect 1,000 lbs of plastic film and win a TREX bench for a local nonprofit (like the one you can see at the Farmers Market). We also work with homeowners to explain how to sort their plastic film into recyclable and non-recyclable materials, which can be taken directly to Food Lion at any time. The plastic film we collect or that you take to the recycling bins at Food Lion or any major grocery store gets sent to TREX, the decking manufacturer based in Winchester, VA. TREX uses 95% recycled material in their products.
What is Plastic Film?
Plastic film is the thin plastic that is used for grocery bags, produce bags, and case overwrap. It is stretchy, comes in any color, and may be marked as #2 or #4 plastic, or as “Plastic In-Store Recyclable,” though it often is not marked.
The list of items TREX accepts include: Bread bags, produce bags, newspaper sleeves, pallet wrap and stretch film, salt and ice bags, grocery bags, case overwrap, bubble wrap, wood pellet bags, plastic shipping envelopes, dry cleaning bags, Ziploc and other reclosable food storage bags.
Plastic film used in manufacture and packaging of meat, frozen food, animal feed, compost, and hay is not accepted. Also unacceptable are shiny, crinkly plastics that tear without stretching, very heavy duty (>10 mil) plastic, vinyl (such as picnic table cloths or shower curtains), and oily or highly soiled materials.
Directions & Parking
SustainFloyd’s Reuse/Recycling events takes place at the Floyd Farmers Market on the First Saturday of every month, year round. During nice weather, we are located outdoors in the Floyd Farmers Market Pavilion, next to the Floyd Refillery. In cold weather, we move indoors to the Sustain Floyd office, located next to the market pavilion inside The Station at 203 South Locust St., Suite H, Floyd, VA 24091.
There are three main parking areas near the Farmer’s Market
Floyd County Transfer Station
Some recyclables can be taken directly to the Floyd County Transfer Station, including electronics, glass, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic, and other small household items.
The Transfer Station is located at 131 Transfer Station Road SE, Floyd, VA 24091. Open Monday thru Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to 11:30am, Closed Sunday.
