Packaging: Dental Care

Tom’s of Maine offers free recycling of any brand toothpaste tubes and caps, mouthwash bottles and caps, floss containers, toothbrushes and packaging. The program is coordinated by Terra Cycle. These items can also be brought to SustainFloyd monthly Reuse/Recycle events. The Beauty Dropoff Bins at Ulta also accepts toothpaste tubes and dental floss packaging of any brand. Toothpastes tubes can be recycled with #2 plastic. Reduce packaging waste and transportation pollutants by purchasing toothpaste tablets and bamboo toothbrushes.

Alternatives

Toothpaste tablets are now available as a way to reduce waste packaging and reduce the weight of product transported. They often come in a reusable tin or glass jar which can then be refilled. They are simple to use and efficient. Another way to reduce dental waste is to choose a bamboo toothbrush. Although the bristles are usually nylon the head can be snapped off and the handle composted. Recycled plastic is also used for toothbrushes, reducing the waste stream. Toothpaste tablets are available at the Floyd Refillery at the Floyd Farmers Market. The Refillery also stocks plastic free dental floss in reusable containers.
