Paper: Brown Paper Grocery Bags

Brown paper grocery bags in good condition can be used for New River Community Action Backpack Program, and are also collected at SustainFloyd’s monthly Reuse/Recycle Events for reuse. They can also be repurposed at home by folding down the top to make a self-standing waste receptacle or liner for a waste bin. They are good for storing onions and garlic and can also be used in compost making or as a garden mulch. Brown paper bags can be recycled with mixed paper in the paper recycling bin at Food Lion.

Preparation

Paper bags for reuse should be, clean, dry and intact.

Alternatives

Reusable tote bags and baskets can used in place of single use paper or plastic grocery bags to conserve natural resources and to reduce materials going into the waste stream. Reusable tote bags can be purchased for a small fee from most grocery stores and from the Floyd Refillery. The Floyd Refillery also carries a small supply of free pre-used tote bags for use at the Farmers Market.
