Post-consumer scrap metal is one of the most valuable materials to be recycled. From appliances to wiring, cans to coffee makers, clothes hangers to construction materials, wire to auto parts– metal is everywhere. Recycling metal is important not only to keep it out of landfills, but also because it saves energy. Recycling metal is generally more energy efficient than mining and smelting the ore for new metal. Also, if you have enough scrap metal, it’s possible to sell it for profit. In Floyd County, most scrap metal that enters our waste stream is collected by local government and sold. This helps reduce our County’s expenses for the costs of collection and handling. Private scrap dealers are also at work here, often collecting scrap metal from larger users. Most metals eventually end up at a scrap metal yard in Roanoke or elsewhere, where they are separated by type and recycled. Mixed metals are shredded or compacted and non-metal components such as plastics and glass removed. The remaining metal is remelted to make ingots or sheets used to make new metal products. Cars, trucks and other heavy equipment are a huge source of recycled metal and follows a similar process.
